At a glance
What is gas ducted heating?
Gas ducted heating, also called ducted heating or gas central heating, uses one gas heater to warm the whole home. The heater sits in the roof space, under the floor or outside, and a fan pushes warm air through insulated ducts to vents in each room.
A thermostat on the wall sets the temperature, and zoning lets you heat the living areas and bedrooms separately.
At the heater
A fan pulls air from the house through the return air grille and filter.
In the heat exchanger
Gas burners heat a sealed heat exchanger and the air warms as it passes over it. The flue takes the fumes outside.
In the ducts
Insulated ducts carry the warm air to floor or ceiling vents in each room.
Benefits
Every room is heated from one central heater, so the bedrooms are as warm as the living room.
Gas burners deliver heat soon after start-up, even on a frosty morning.
Heat the living areas by day and the bedrooms at night instead of the whole house.
Heat output stays the same however cold it gets outside.
Refrigerated cooling can often be added to the same ducts for summer.
Where it suits
A replacement heater usually connects to your existing ducts and vents, which keeps the changeover simple.
Long, cold winters are where a whole-home system earns its keep, which is why ducted heating is so common in Victoria and the ACT.
A raised floor suits floor vents, which let warm air rise through the room.
The heater goes in the roof space and warm air comes down through ceiling vents.
Zoning keeps the bedrooms off during the day and the living areas off overnight.
