What is gas ducted heating?

One heater, warm air in every room

Gas ducted heating, also called ducted heating or gas central heating, uses one gas heater to warm the whole home. The heater sits in the roof space, under the floor or outside, and a fan pushes warm air through insulated ducts to vents in each room.

A thermostat on the wall sets the temperature, and zoning lets you heat the living areas and bedrooms separately.

How gas ducted heating works

At the heater

Air is drawn in

A fan pulls air from the house through the return air grille and filter.

In the heat exchanger

Air is warmed

Gas burners heat a sealed heat exchanger and the air warms as it passes over it. The flue takes the fumes outside.

In the ducts

Warmth is delivered

Insulated ducts carry the warm air to floor or ceiling vents in each room.

Benefits

Benefits of gas ducted heating

Whole-home warmth from one heater

Every room is heated from one central heater, so the bedrooms are as warm as the living room.

Heats quickly

Gas burners deliver heat soon after start-up, even on a frosty morning.

Zoned control

Heat the living areas by day and the bedrooms at night instead of the whole house.

Steady on the coldest nights

Heat output stays the same however cold it gets outside.

Add-on cooling option

Refrigerated cooling can often be added to the same ducts for summer.

Where it suits

Homes that suit ducted gas heating

Ducted heating suits homes with long winters and a gas connection. These are the homes we work on most.

Homes with an older ducted heater

A replacement heater usually connects to your existing ducts and vents, which keeps the changeover simple.

Replacement

Cold-climate homes

Long, cold winters are where a whole-home system earns its keep, which is why ducted heating is so common in Victoria and the ACT.

Victoria and the ACT

Homes with underfloor space

A raised floor suits floor vents, which let warm air rise through the room.

Floor vents

Single-storey homes on a slab

The heater goes in the roof space and warm air comes down through ceiling vents.

Ceiling vents

Homes with separate living and sleeping areas

Zoning keeps the bedrooms off during the day and the living areas off overnight.
