At a glance
What is a split system air conditioner?
A split system air conditioner has a wall mounted indoor unit and an outdoor unit, joined by refrigerant pipes. It is called a split because the system is split between the two.
Most are reverse cycle split systems, which run that process in either direction. That is why one unit can cool a room in summer and heat it in winter.
Inside
The indoor unit draws warm room air over a cold coil, which soaks up the heat.
In the pipes
Refrigerant takes that heat through the wall to the outdoor unit.
Outside
The outdoor unit releases the heat, and cool air keeps flowing into the room.
Outside
The outdoor unit collects heat from the outside air, even on a cold day.

Benefits
Cool the room now, and the same reverse cycle split system will heat it when winter comes.Heat the room now, and the same reverse cycle split system will cool it when summer comes.
With no ducts or ceiling work, a single split system costs far less to install than ducted air conditioning.
Each unit has its own remote and thermostat, so you only run the rooms you are using.
Inverter compressors speed up and slow down to hold the temperature instead of switching on and off.
The compressor sits outside, which makes a wall mounted split system a good fit for bedrooms.
Where it suits
Quiet, with a sleep mode and a timer, and cheap to run for one room overnight.
A larger unit with wide airflow covers the room everyone uses, kitchen included.
Heat or cool the room you work in during the day and leave the rest of the house off.
No roof space is needed. The outdoor unit sits on a balcony or a wall bracket.
Add heating and cooling to a new space without touching the system in the main house.
