What is evaporative cooling?

Cooling with water and fresh air

Evaporative cooling, also called evaporative air conditioning, uses a rooftop unit to draw outside air through wet filter pads. As the water evaporates it cools the air, and a fan pushes that air through ducts to vents in each room.

Unlike refrigerated air conditioning, an evaporative cooler brings in fresh air all the time, so you leave some windows or doors open while it runs. It works best in dry heat and less well on humid days.

How an evaporative cooler works

On the roof

Hot air is drawn in

The fan pulls hot outside air through water-soaked filter pads.

In the pads

Evaporation cools it

Water evaporating from the pads takes heat out of the air and filters out dust.

Through the house

Fresh air flows out

Ducts deliver the cool air to each room, and it pushes warm air out through open windows and doors.

Benefits

Benefits of evaporative cooling

Fresh air, not recycled air

An evaporative cooler keeps replacing the air in your home with cooled outside air, so the house never feels closed up.

Low running costs

It runs a fan and a small water pump, with no compressor, so it uses far less electricity than refrigerated cooling.

Open-house living

Leave the back doors open and the kids running in and out without losing your cool air.

Whole-home cooling

One rooftop unit cools every room through ceiling vents.

Simple to maintain

A regular service keeps the pads, pump and water system clean and working.

Where it suits

Homes that suit evaporative cooling

Evaporative cooling suits dry climates and homes that like fresh air. It is less effective where summers are humid.

Dry-climate homes

It works best where summers are hot and dry, such as Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra.

Hot, dry summers

Indoor-outdoor homes

If you like the doors open to the deck in summer, evaporative cooling is designed to run that way.

Doors open

Family homes with roof space

The cooler sits on the roof and ducts in the roof space feed a vent in each room.

Needs roof space

Homes with an older cooler

A replacement unit can usually reuse the existing ducts and vents.

Replacement

Homes with ducted heating

Many Victorian homes pair evaporative cooling for summer with gas ducted heating for winter.

Evaporative cooling vs reverse cycle

Evaporative air conditioning and reverse cycle cool in very different ways. Your climate usually decides it.
