What is hydronic heating?

Heating with hot water, not hot air

A hydronic heating system heats water at a boiler or heat pump and pumps it through sealed pipes to panel radiators, or to pipes set in the floor slab. The radiators and floor give off gentle, even warmth, and the water returns to be reheated.

Because nothing is blown around, hydronic heating is silent and doesn’t stir up dust. Each room can have its own control.

How hydronic heating works

At the boiler or heat pump

Water is heated

A gas boiler or an electric heat pump heats water in a sealed loop.

In the pipes

Hot water circulates

A pump sends the hot water through insulated pipes to each room.

In the room

Warmth radiates

Panel radiators or the floor slab release the heat, and the cooler water flows back to be reheated.

Benefits

Benefits of hydronic heating

Silent, draught-free warmth

There are no fans and no moving air, just steady heat from the radiators or the floor.

Kinder for allergies

With no air blown through ducts, less dust is stirred up around the house.

Room-by-room control

Radiators can be turned up, down or off in each room.

Gas or heat pump

Run the system from a gas boiler or an efficient electric heat pump.

Even, radiant heat

Radiant warmth heats the room evenly, without hot blasts and cold corners.

Where it suits

Homes that suit hydronic heating

Hydronic heating can go into most homes, but timing matters. These are the projects it suits best.

New builds

In-slab hydronic floor heating is laid before the concrete is poured, so a new build is the time to plan it.

In-slab floor heating

Renovations and extensions

Pipes are easiest to run while walls and floors are open, with panel radiators fitted at the end.

Panel radiators

Period homes

Radiator panels can be retrofitted with pipes run under the floor, where there is no room for ducts.

Retrofit

Allergy-conscious households

No blown air means less dust moving through bedrooms and living areas.

No blown air

Cold-climate homes

Steady background warmth suits long winters in places like Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT.

Hydronic vs gas ducted vs reverse cycle

Hydronic heating feels different from ducted systems because it heats with water, not air. Here is how they compare.
