What are gas heaters and gas log fires?

Room heating with a real flame

A gas heater burns natural gas or LPG to warm a single room or living area. Flued gas heaters and gas wall furnaces send their fumes outside through a flue. A gas log fire, or gas fireplace, does the same job behind glass, with a flame you can see.

Because they burn gas indoors, these heaters need regular servicing. Energy Safe Victoria recommends a gas heater service at least every two years.

How a flued gas heater works

At the burner

Gas is burned

The burner lights and heats the heat exchanger or firebox.

In the room

Heat is given off

A fan moves room air over the hot surfaces, and a gas log fire also radiates heat through the glass.

Through the flue

Fumes go outside

The flue carries the combustion gases out of the house.

Benefits

Benefits of gas heaters and gas log fires

Fast warmth with a real flame

A gas heater warms the main living area quickly, and a gas log fire gives you the look of a fire without the wood.

Heats quickly

Gas heat is there soon after you switch on, with no waiting for the room to warm up slowly.

A feature for the living room

A gas log fire becomes the centre of the room, and runs from a remote or wall switch.

No ducts needed

A gas heater fits on a wall, and an inbuilt gas fireplace can go into an existing chimney.

Safety checked

Each service checks the burner, flue and ventilation, and tests for carbon monoxide.

Where it suits

Where gas heaters and log fires work best

Gas heaters and gas fireplaces suit homes that want strong heat in the main living area. These are the jobs we see most.

Living rooms

Put the heat where you spend winter evenings, without heating the rest of the house.

Existing fireplaces

An inbuilt gas log fire fits into an old open fireplace and uses the chimney for its flue.

Open-plan areas

Higher-output gas log fires and space heaters suit large, open rooms.

Homes with an older gas heater

Wall furnaces and space heaters need regular servicing, and we can replace them when parts run out.

Rental properties

In Victoria, rental providers must have gas appliances safety checked every two years. Ask us about the heaters in your rental.

Gas heater vs ducted heating vs split system

A gas heater or log fire heats one area well. If you want more rooms covered, or cooling too, compare the alternatives.
